TARGET AUDIENCE
who is the primary target audience for this advertising campaign?
the primary audience is towards younger children. this is due to the flashy, colorful and exciting looking posters. the film posters showcase a recognizable children's toy, LEGO, and is all about superheroes and saving the world. the advertisers are trying to grab the attention of a younger audience that like LEGOS and action films. the film posters suggests the film os of a high intensity and of fast pace suggesting there will be now slower or "less interesting romance sections". this would appeal to this younger audience.
who is the secondary target audience for this advertising campaign?
the secondary audience would be the parent that are taking their children. if the parents, that have to take their younger children to the movies, think that it is not worth the money they will not take their children to go and see the film. in the end, if the parents aren't willing to pay, the film will not earn any money and would have been a big waste of time. in order to entice the parents to come and watch the film, the films showcase well known more adult voicing actors that the parents will want to go and see.
what differences between the two groups could lead to different interpretation of the campaign?
the differences between the two groups could suggest that they are trying to encompass a larger target audience. it could suggest that the LEGO MOVIE creators are trying to make the film accessible and entertaining for all generations and for everyone. they are trying to make it something that everyone will . watch and therefore will earn more money from it.

CRITICAL EVALUATION
is it a good poster campaign?
yes i think that the poster campaign is very good. it attracts a very large audience to watch the film and makes the film look very appealing to watch.
does it communicate effectively with the audience?
yes, it conveys its genre, action, it showcases its voice actors, it says when its coming out, it sys its title, it basically shows everything. it conveys everything about the movie without giving too much away and spoiling the plot.
are their any alternative readings that may harm the marketing campaign?
yes, because they are trying to attract as big of an audience as possible, it could suggest that maybe they are just being a bit desperate and doing the film just for money and not for the enjoyment of the people. apart from that though, no.

LEGO MOVIE POSTERS + EVALUATION
MAIN POSTER ANALYSIS:
Connotation/denotation
- What are the main colours used in the poster? What do they connote? There are many different colours used in the poster and the creators have used certain colours to emphasize the characters of the different colours. EG Lord Business is red and fiery which has connotations of evil. furthermore the unicorn is pink which could suggest that it is happy and harmless. the colour bleu also represents trust loyalty and wisdom. the colour black suggests that these characters are sneaky EG batman and wildstyle, however the flashes of pink and purple in wildstyle's hair and clothes suggests she has some flair.
- What are the main figures/objects/background of the poster? The figures in the front of the poster are the main heroes, whereas the people in the back there the evil people, suggesting that the heroes are being chased by them. moreover, there are many skyscrapers and cranes which could suggest that the film is set in a city scene. there are also flying helicopters which could suggest that the film is set in the future. there is an explosion in the background also which could suggests that the genre of the film is action. the superheroes in the front and in the air (all with different abilities and powers) suggest that there is going to be fight scenes and that they are going to encounter different problems that when they work together as a team can overcome.
- Are the messages in the poster primarily visual, text, or both? The messages in the poster are mainly visual, highlighting the characters in the film and some of the main points and things that are going to happen in the film. however, some more formal and important information is portrayed through text EG. the release date, the films name, the tagline, who voice acts ect... . the more important messages are written in text so that this information is not missed or skipped over without being missed. overall messages are portrayed both through text and visual references.
- Who do you think is the intended audience for the poster? i think that the main audience for this film is children. Firstly, this is because the film is based on a childhood toy, Lego, and also via all the bright colours. the bright colours appeal to a younger audience and makes the poster look very vibrant. however, the secondary audience it towards the parents of the children. this is because if it does not appeal to the children, then the parent will not take the child to go and see the film. i think that there is no gender bias, there is an equal balance of male and female roles and there are main female roles also.
purpose
- What persuasive techniques are used by the poster? it is bright and flashy colours with a lot of things happening in the background which could suggest that the film is action packed and very exciting.
- Which genre conventions are referred to? there are many used like the wise person is old, superheros wear a special suit and that evil characters must be big and stand out a lot with fire.
- Is a star used as a USP (Unique Selling Point)? not in the main poster but in each of the character profile posters there are the names of famous people who voice act the specific character in the poster.
- Are "expert witnesses" (i.e. critics) quoted? Why/why not? not in this poster, however the are in some of the other posters. this is because reviews can fill up the page and are unnecessary in the main posters.
- What pleasures (gratifications) are promised by the poster? the poster promises a lot of action and conflict. this is due to the superheros and supervillans and the explosions and fire in the poster.
- How is attention gained (humour, shock, surprise familiar face of a star)? attention is gained through many ways, for example there are many familiar faces like Batman, Superman and Yoda and also through the humour of Emmett's facial expressions.
- How does the tagline work? (humour, pun, alliteration etc?) the tagline works via humour. the phrase 'the story of a nobody who saved everybody' is quite funny as it suggests that the hero (Emmett) accidentally save the world which is quite hard to do and is unexpected.
- Who are the institutions involved in production?:

LEGO MOVIE VIDEOGAME
key characters? who can you play? in the lego game you can play all the main characters aswell as many other less well known characters that can be seen in the film. overall, you can play 105 different characters, all having different abilities and features. for example, some characters, like Emmett, are regular builders that need plans in order to build objects whereas some people, like Vitruvius, are master builders and can build anything from scratch without plans.
voice overs? are they the same as in the film? all of the characters played in the game have different voice actors as in the film, however, the voice actors that acted were very similar to the real ones.
soundtrack - similarities? the soundtracks are different in both of them however the game does include a few of the soundtracks and sounds from the film like 'everything is awesome'.
how did they market the game? the game was sold in many different game stores and shops. it was marketed as an add-on to the film, like an extra, that could be played on top of the film. however, the game does still make sense even if you have not watched the film. moreover, there are many different play throughs and videos on youtube
Review the game was it a success?

my verdict:
PROS:
contains same plot as the film
multiplayer
favours gamer
CONS:
music quality / sound effects are not very good
contains the same cut scenes as the film - a bit cheaty
switches to cut scenes of the film (good graphics) to worse game graphics
does not favour audience
overall, i think that the game was quite good. it had an ok storyline, but it was not very clear what you had to do. for the gamer, it was quite fun to mess around and play but the game was not very interesting for someone else to watch. the game was good to play with friends as there was a multiplayer function but the split screen at some times was quite annoying. moreover, when the gameplay switched to animation, it used scenes from the film that had higher graphics and the difference was noticeable. overall, i felt that the film was a bit rushed. 5.5 stars out of 10
